The new 40.1

The crossover-like concept is called the 40.1, and the sedan is the 40.2. Of course, expect these names to turn out to be XC40 and S40, like in other Volvos.

The 40.2.

The base engine will be a 1.5 liter, turbocharged three-cylinder that produces around 200 horsepower. This will be sent to the front wheels.

Additionally, a diesel four-cylinder will be available. Its power and transmission are unknown.

However, a new engine choice is coming with the 40 Series as well. It will be called the T5 Twin Engine and features the same turbocharged three-cylinder as the base engine, but features an electric motor and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. Total output is supposedly around 300 horsepower.

The 40 Series is based upon the new Volvo CMA platform, which can be front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive with an electrically driven rear axle. The CMA platform is designed to support a fully electric vehicle, which means that we might see a pure electric 40 Series to fight the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive and additional new rivals.

The production XC40 will be the first 40 Series variant to be unveiled; it is expected to be unveiled in 2017. In the UK, the XC40 will cost around £21,000, which is around £2,000 more than the current V40. The new V40 will be unveiled in 2018. Pricing for the US is unknown.

These things will sell like hotcakes. I like the ride height on the car, but my gut tells me that it will sit lower in production.

Any word on the V40? Will it be a hatch/mini-wagon like the current generation, or just an XC40 without the lift?

I’m guessing the hatchback is the V40.

I really like the lines of that sedan, but I feel like the concept-car-big-wheels forced it to sit too high. Maybe with more realistic wheels and a lower ride height it will look better?

Kind of afraid it would be, what a blind spot. Hopefully its design will age less quickly than the current gen; I used to like the V40 a lot when it was new, but it’s somehow become really bland and a bit bloated, especially the rear.
